Unlike the other males in his family, Red did not get the big genes. He's an average size, maybe even on the small side. So naturally he was never thought to be a good fighter. And he's not. But Red knows of his defect (that's what he calls it, at least), so he's spent hours and days sharpening his wit, becoming smarter, cleverer. Toning his abilities to a point that he can take on even the largest tom, and leave with little injuries and victorious.
Besides being clever, Red managed to become educated during his time in the wild. He's learned about how different cats live, intrigued at how such similar animals could live so differently. For days he would leave his family members to live with a different group of feral cats, learn how they go about things. Something that bothers him though is how he's never lived in a clan, well, not really. Despite his disbelief in StarClan, Red was always confused by how the clans worked and went about their lives.
During the brief time he stayed with MeadowClan, he experienced little about actual clan life. Only picking up what he could from the old ForestClan cats. After all, it was a busy time setting up the clans. Red never got the full treatment of being in a clan.
This tom can be quite confusing. During his travels, he learned to make himself sound better, smarter, than other cats, while acting their equal. It can be extremely confusing to other cats when Red puts on a smile and says "Clan cats are stupid, with their belief in StarClan. I wish I was one of them."
Surprisingly, Red does want to be a clan cat. He does want to feel the strength that binds these cats together. To feel the loyalty from more than kin, from cats that are not even related to you. He would never give up his disbelief, he would never submit to the StarClan which does not exist. But to feel the power that comes from being a clan cat.
Well, that would just be sweet as sugar for Red.
And it's his need for power that makes him dangerous. Red is definitely ambitious. To control the whole forest? No. StarClan forbid he even think of that. But to control a clan, to have all other cats look up to him; that's what power he wants. Not the harsh, distrusting, cruel power of possible rulers. But the power of respect.
Which is Red's key point. Being a small tom raised around large, powerful ones, Red always feels like he never got the respect he deserved from his family or friends. He always felt they were laughing at him when he left to explore other ways of life. Always thought that they mocked him when he wasted time swimming. Once, he swears he heard his best friend compare him to a kittypet.
He brought that cat to his knees just to show the forest his strength. It was that day he realized violence could get him somewhere.
When he's with other cats, Red lets his darker side fade away. He puts on a look of innocence, one that tries to say "Oh hey, I'm Red. I just caught a mouse, wanna share?" To express equality with other cats (when he knows he's better) is a key point in gaining their respect. He doesn't really have a problem of being with other cats though. He likes it, even if it means degrading himself slightly.
Except for Kittypets. Now, if you were born a kittypet, or forced to be one, he doesn't care. It wasn't your choice. But for those who willingly take themselves away from the wild to have a "safe" home every night are scum to him. Weaklings who could not survive the wild. And those cats will never regain themselves in Red's eyes.[/ul]
