Ashtail hobbled across the Thunderclan Camp, towards the Highrock, where the clan was assembled, waiting for him.
He nodded to Miraclepaw and Shimmerheart as he passed them, a small smile on his face. Today was the day. He was tired and old, he would miss being a warrior, but he had to admit to himself that he was too old, too weak to continue.
He padded toward Frozenstar, stopping in front of him. The grey leader spoke. “Ashtail, is it your wish to give up the name of warrior and go join the elders?”
“It is. “ Ashtail mewed, feeling a shiver run through him.
“And is it also your wish to receive a new name?”
“It is,” he repeated.
Frozenstar nodded, then spoke again, “Your Clan honors you and all the service you have given us. I call upon StarClan to give you many seasons of rest.” He laid his tail on Ashtail’s shoulders, and he bowed his head. He was an elder now.
Then the tail was gone, and the voice of his leader rang out again, “Spirits of StarClan, you know every cat by name. I ask you to take away the name from the cat you see before you, for it no longer stands for what he is. By my authority as Clan leader, and with the approval of our warrior ancestors, I give this cat a new name. From this moment he will be known as Bloodfrost, for the blood he was drawn from his enemies, and the many frosts of winter he has endured.”
A muzzle was placed on his head, but he was too shocked to move. His clan was calling his new name, yowling it to the heavens.
“Bloodfrost! Bloodfrost!”
He jerked away from his leader, “No!” He yowled, fur standing on end. “No! I would rather become an apprentice again or live as a kittypet than live with such a name as this.” All was silent. “Bloodfrost,” he scoffed, “How can you force such a name upon me? I am disgusted, no, revolted, shocked, disappointed.”
Then, he looked around, the cats of his clan were staring, their eyes burning into him. Icegaze, Naturespirit, Everlastingpromise. Suddenly, he realized, his clan had become fail. He cried then, his tears soaking into his pelt, which suddenly grew red, like blood.
Bloodfrost.
He screamed, “NO!!!” The rest of his clan laughed manaicly, racing towards him, coming to sweep him up in a tide of fail.
“NO!!!”
Ashtail jerked awake, panting, in the Thunderclan Warriors Den. He was in the prime of his youth. The cats next to him were Spottedflower and Bluestream. He sighed. The clan was safe. Fantasy names hadn’t taken over. Not yet at least.
He curled up again, grateful for traditional names, and those devoted to them.
“Thank you,” he whispered, “for keeping me sane.”
