He has successfully managed to surprise his mentor. At least that was good. However, Finchpaw did not rejoice, did not even feel a streak of pleasure run through him at this victory, because, all in all, the battle was not won, and he was in a very uncomfortable, vulnerable position.
Brightnose moved, her legs pushing up in an attempt to get Finchpaw off of her. Instantly, Finchpaw felt his the weight on his tail disappear and he now that he was free, he could break away from his mentor and then resume a proper, defensive stance. And he did just that.
Finchpaw let Brightnose's legs push him away and he rolled off of her completely, putting a foxlength between his mentor and his own body. He then let his roll work to an advantage, coming to a natural, balanaced crouch, eyes flicking upward to meet Brightnose's face. His tail flicked back and forth casually, like he wasn't ready to pounce on her, like he was in a pleasant conversation instead.
But he was ready to pounce-- ready to defend. In fact, the possibility of offense was new to Finchpaw, and his stragetic roll had opened up the offer to him.
Why not take it?
So Finchpaw built up power in his hunter's legs and sprang forth.

The FogClanner was surprised when her apprentice attacked again; he obviously had more confidence now. She thought little as he came toward her, only pausing for quick caluculations and guesses. The tricolored cat shot forward, but not before the ginger and white tom's paws came down on her back. With a grunt, she buckled for only a second. However, that second was all it took for the lanky tom to be on her back. Great.
Unfortunately, it looked as though she was going to have to fight dirty to get out of this one. Not real dirty, but she'd need to use a somewhat more dishonorable move than she would have liked. Still, battles were about winning, not fairness. All right, some rules were involved, but besides not killing your opponent, it was a free field.
And though he might be in some pain, it wasn't like they couldn't fix it right away, and he'd learn something, after all. The benefits far outweighed the cons.
So, stretching with all the strength her legs could muster, the she-cat leaned up and bit the young tabby's tail, pulling it slightly.

Finchpaw's attack landed. And how could it not when Finchpaw was a natural at this part-- the crouch, the pounce, the hit. Brightnose was nothing but a insignificant, squirming mouse and he the hunter, and the kill would come quickly now that he had the advantage. Admittedly, she was a rather big mouse-- kind of stocky and well-fed too-- but he just needed to wrestle her to the ground, pin her there with his own muscle (ha! what muscle?) and the fight would be over. He would have won his first, real-- well sort of real-- fight. It wasn't a playfight at least, so this was an improvement.
He had some trouble though. Because he was lighter than Brightnose. And he wasn't used to "wrestling" a cat down to the ground.
Oh and she bit his tail.
Instant pain. There wasn't much of it but it shocked Finchpaw enough to let out a yowl. He felt it tug and he lost his balance. Pathetically, he flopped off of Brightnose, when just the other second, he had had the advantage.
He pulled back away from her, ripping his tail from her mouth. He was bewildered; astonished. She had bitten him? She had bitten...him! He had never been bitten before, well, maybe once by Firepaw, but it was all in fun back then.
Finchpaw was pretty sure this was against the rules.
Wait; are there any rules? There aren't any in a real fight so I suppose she's allowed to do whatever the hell she wants-- still, usually teeth and claws aren't allowed.
Finchpaw was so astonished by Brightnose's choice of attack that he couldn't think of one to do himself. He just sort of half sat, half stood, his eyes trailing on Brightnose's figure warily. Who knows what the she-cat would do next?
