Beliefs •
Masq believes in the basics of StarClan -- you go there when you die, bad cats go somewhere else, etc -- but not critically so. The main reason she does is so that she and Poltergeist maintain a good relationship and so that they don't get in a fight and end up hating each other, like Polter and Mar did.
Appearance •
Though Masquerade is small, it doesn't mean that she isn't strong and flexible. Her muscles, though thin and relatively small, are easily enough to provide her the protection she needs -- if she can't win a battle, she can certainly escape from it. Her legs are somewhat scrawny, though this rarely concerns her; she only finds it problematic when the fat in them seems to disappear, leaving her cold and often covered in snow. She has an athletic but thin build, not underweight but not something that would be healthy for her in the colder seasons.
Although she certainly wouldn't be classified as 'the most beautiful cat in the world', she is easily called pretty. Her tail is mostly black, some white flecks near the base and, just past those, a couple faint stripes of orange and brown. She has a blackish marking behind her left ear, extending toward the tip but stopping before it gets all the way there. It dips down behind her head a small bit, then stops. There's also a black marking on her forehead, beginning just behind her ears and stretching toward each side of her left eye, making a triangle. The rest of her coat is a beautifully sheening white.
A crystal clear, light shade of blue, Masq's eyes are extremely pretty. They add beauty to her; if they were amber, they would likely pull from her appearance instead of adding to it. Glinting silvery in the moonlight, they seem to sparkle when she's happy but cloud over with a milky white colour when she's not. They are bright and almost flourishing, as if she is a flower and those are the two perfect petals. Not at all masculine, they are something that a different kind of cat might use as something to draw toms in – however, she isn't really the type and prefers to get a tom centred on her personality.
Personality •
'Secretive' doesn't really mean that she keeps a lot of secrets; however, she can keep other cats' secrets quite easily because she doesn't mind letting cats take a load off their shoulders and putting it on hers -- after all, if it's not a secret about her, it's not hard to keep and it's not stressful. She's very trustworthy; unless a life is at stake, she won't tell a soul. Masq can always stick to a promise and is, overall, trustworthy. She would never intentionally hurt anyone except for her worst enemies. This is one of the many ways she is similar to Poltergeist.
Once Masq's heart has been captured, she'll love the tom until the end. She would be completely devoted, willing to give her life in order to be with him -- however, if he rejected her then she would fall harder than she would for anything else. She's extremely sweet and caring, similar to the pet cat that never leaves you alone because it's too busy purring and loving on you. A bit of an angel on the inside, she would be a pretty wonderful mate; she would never think of cheating or breaking up with the other cat, unless she felt that the feeling was mutual. She's extremely loving and very caring, not only for her love but for everyone else.
Once Masq knows, she'll always remember and always be sympathetic, trying to convince a comrade that life isn't so horrible without their ex or that it's okay to vent at another cat -- quietly, mind you -- and release anger. She is understanding, welcoming any cats searching for advice and doing the best she can to help them. Of course, sympathy runs strongly through her veins; she hates to see a cat in pain and it isn't uncommon for her to try to help a Clan's warriors, as long as they're not currently fighting anyone she cares about.
Around cats in general, Masq has a tendency to be a bit quieter than when she's around someone close to her. She isn't the most talkative cat in general, a bit withdrawn in more crowded areas and more flirtatious when there are only a handful of cats. She doesn't like to be the centre of attention, but she can put on a fake smile when she needs to. Masquerade treats normal cats the way she treats closer ones, but with a bit less of the familiarity and more caution.
Skills •
Masq is quite unlike her brother, Marauder; she doesn't blunder around in the forest when she's hunting and she actually pays attention to what she says -- she thinks about what she says before she says it and is just generally skilled with words. Although hunting birds and squirrels is a bit more difficult for her, she manages. Masq finds the fresh air and quick movement of hunting rabbits a bit more enjoyable than the dark confines of trees, though not so much so that she avoids the forest altogether. She also prefers fishing over trying to catch birds, especially since birds scare half the prey away when they screech and fish, if anything, disturb nothing more than the river. Masquerade is also good at swimming, fairly athletic and quick.
On the other hand, Masq doesn't often know how to handle rough situations. She doesn't know if she should run or try to talk or, worst case scenario, fight. Considering her small size and how she is more adept at running, she likely couldn't fight her way out if she were surrounded and half the time has no idea whether or not she should even bother resisting. When she's fighting, she's almost always on the defensive side; she usually has to keep herself from getting hurt too badly then run off as fast as she can. She sometimes prefers it this way, but it also means being just about useless in any extended fights.
History •
Masquerade was the last one born, the last one to open her eyes, and the last one to leave the family. She was always a bit closer to her father spiritually, but preferred her mother because Beirut had a tendency to relate everything to StarClan. Although she believed, Masq didn't like hearing her father preach about it whenever he got the chance. She was the first one to discover her mother's lack of faith, when she was four moons old. Masq had noticed a faint air of hostility around her parents whenever her father went off on some random story and she figured the best way to figure out why was to go to one of her parents. She chose her mother, simply because they were closer; it was good that she did, since Beirut still thought that Syria believed. Syria confessed that as much as she loved her mate, she was mentally agonised at night because she supported his beliefs so little. Although Masq was offended and hurt because her mother had lied to her for so long, she didn't begin to avoid her or anything. Masq liked to believe that religion should never damage a relationship, so she never gave it the chance.
Two moons passed; now that the kits were five moons and Beirut's teaching was getting a little more serious, Syria finally lost it. She pulled Masquerade and Polter aside one day and told them -- focusing on Polter especially -- that StarClan was a lie. Masquerade could tell that her oldest brother was starting to believe his mother, and she herself turned on him. When the two of them were alone -- Marauder was sleeping, Beirut was off trying to dream of StarClan in some sacred area, and Syria was hunting for a midnight snack -- she started practically yelling at him, telling him he couldn't lose faith in what he believed in. He eventually stopped listening to Syria, thanks to Masq; she could tell that he really did believe by the time a moon had passed.
When Masq was seven moons, Syria could tell that her attempts to corrupt the two kits were failing. She grew enraged one night and told Polter, who had been clearly resisting the entire time, to go tell his father that Syria didn't believe if it mattered to him so much. Polter took her seriously and went and told Beirut, interrupting Marauder from practising defence. Masquerade watched in shock as her parents argued, eventually fighting physically. Beirut, who was bigger and stronger, cornered Syria on the edge of a bit of an overhang. A careless, rough swipe pushed her suddenly enough to make her lose her balance and tumble a good distance, breaking two of her legs. Beirut, who honestly hadn't tried to hurt her as badly as he did, rushed down to her side and apologised over and over until Syria finally slipped away a short time afterward.
Beirut distanced himself from the family, staying closer to Masq than he did with the others. Marauder wasn't supportive of the religion and Polter was the one who caused Syria's death, in Beirut's mind; that left Masquerade, who tried to convince her father to forgive Poltergeist. He never did and one night bade her farewell, telling her not to let the others know he was gone. She promised to keep quiet about it, then he disappeared from her life forever.
No more than a moon later, Marauder and Poltergeist got into an argument. Masquerade left halfway through, so she never knew how it turned out; she had hated watching her mother die and didn't want to see the same thing happen with her brothers. She was relieved to return and find Polter perfectly fine, just quieter than he normally was.
Another three moons passed and they reached their thirteen moon mark. Marauder had occasionally come to visit Masquerade, while Polter slept; she was happy to see that he was alive and well, but still as ambitious and aggressive as ever. One night, Masquerade decided to leave. She told Polter that she would visit him, but that she needed to find her own calling. He understood and wished her luck as she left. At fourteen moons, she visited Polter at the same time that Marauder decided to visit her -- another argument led to a physical fight that Marauder lost. He swore that he would kill Polter before leaving, and after Masquerade had helped Polter recover a bit she, too, left, returning to her own home by the river.
