A pure black form flashed through the trees, weaving among the trunks agilely in pursuit of a small gray rabbit. The cat's eyes were emerald green and gleamed with the light of the hunt. Cold winter air made it seem as though the forest was encased in ice, but the she-cat had been running for a while, and her body heat kept the cold away. Just because she had been out running didn't mean that she had caught anything, though. Prey was scarce in the middle of leaf bare, and the she-cat had been lucky to come upon anything.
Even rarer to find was one of her Clanmates. The majority were huddled up back at camp, staying close to each other to remain warm. Not Nightheart. She had to get her daily run in. Running kept her sane; it was the medicine to all of her problems. So run she did, and if by running she could catch some prey all the better. It would have been nice to have a Clanmate out with her for assistance in hunting, but Nightheart didn't mind that she was alone. Hardly any cat was fast enough for her liking anyway, or as energetic. Youthful energy burned in her, demanding a release, and Nightheart was forced to comply. Older cats just weren't the same. They were just so...calm, and stoic. Not energetic and youthful like her.
The rabbit was running out of places to go; the frozen ground was hard to make new burrows in, and it had probably been out looking for food too. Nightheart, in one of her rare flashes of wisdom, concluded that this had drawn it out farther than usual from its den, and now it was being chased the whole cruel distance back. But the MeadowClan warrior had been chasing it for a while - no doubt the den would be nearby. Nightheart attempted to quicken her stride, the cold air she breathed in stinging her throat. She had to catch this rabbit soon, or it would get away.
