Oakwhisker sat watching Sandpaw and Badgerpaw from across the camp. He smiled as he thought of himself in his younger days. It seemed as if Sandpaw wasn't very fond of Badgerpaw. He chuckled at this. He could see the two becoming mates and having kits, though he knew he would get quite a mouth-full from Sandpaw is he walked over there and voiced his thoughts. So he sat and watched the two.
Oakwhisker soon found that he was bored with watching the misdoings of apprentices. He pricked his ears and looked around for Firefang, his dearest friend. He knew the tom wasn't the most friendly tom to others, but Oakwhisker had grown very close to him. Firefang was the only cat that knew of Oakwhisker's belief in StarClan, and vise versa. Oakwhisker found it strange that they should be, probably, the only two cats in PineClan that believed in the starry warriors and the best of friends. He thanked StarClan for such a companion.
Oakwhisker spotted Firefang across the clearing and dashed over to him, giving him a playful bat on his shoulder. "Hey Firefang! What's up?" He sat in front of his friend and smiled. Oakwhisker always felt happier around the tom. Maybe they would go hunting? Or maybe they would go and practice fight? Or maybe they would just sit around and talk like Badgerpaw and Sandpaw?

Firefang twitched his ears and hissed a low complaint. Those blasted flies were so annoying. Why couldn't they just go away? The ginger tom made quite a comical sight when he started batting at the flies with claws unsheathed. He wanted the sodding things gone, and he wanted them gone that instant. His claws just barely missed one of the insects and it flew away. A smug grin broke his annoyed expression. "That's right. And don't come back either," he muttered as if his threat could actually intimidate the flies.
His hackles were raised, his tail was fluffed, and his claws were unsheathed. A cold fury blazed in his eyes as he stared in the direction that the flies ahd flown in. Once they were out of sight he began to calm down slightly. It's okay. They're gone. You defeated them, and they won't be coming back. The small assurance comforted Firefang, and he sat down. His tail curled around his front paws, which were currently digging their claws into the earth that was dry and cracked from the lack of rain.
"Hey, Oakwhisker!" Firefang chirped enthusiastically. Being around his friend always seemed to help the ginger tom get out of his bad moods. "I just scared away a ruthless band of flies from the camp. They won't dare come back." He puffed out his chest proudly. The camp was safe from annoyance now that Firefang was on the job!

Oakwhisker chuckled at Firefang's words: "I just scared away a ruthless band of flies from the camp. They won't dare come back."
Oakwhisker rolled his eyes playfully then meowed, "Isn't that what you said last time? Hmm?" Oakwhisker knew that if anyone else had said that to Firefang they would probably leave the conversation with no ears and barely a tail. He laughed at his own joke, knowing that Firefang wouldn't take it offensive. Well at least not seriously, he would probably joke back. Oakwhisker batted at Firefang's shoulder then meowed, "Let's go do something. You up for a hunt? Whoever catches more wins!" He waited for Firefang to show some sign that he accepted the challenge before he raced toward the front entrance. He loved being a warrior. He loved being able to support his clan while having fun at the same time. He knew that he and Firefang couldn't get in trouble for having a contest at hunting. It seemed like they got into trouble for their playfulness more and more. He smiled at this as he waited for his friend at the entrance of the camp.[/blockquote]

Firefang mentally flailed for a moment. Had Oakwhisker seriously just insulted him? No, it hadn't been an insult. It had been a joke. Oakwhisker would never insult his abilities. He was his best friend. It had to have been a joke, right?
"I might have said that last time, but it was an entirely different group of flies this time. I could tell." Firefang grinned and padded after his friend. Of course he knew he had no way of confirming his statement, but he had to say something so he wouldn't look foolish. "Sure, hunting sounds great!"
Firefang started out of the entrance with a flick of his tail. By now, Oakwhisker knew that Firefang liked to lead these little expiditions of theirs. It made him feel more powerful, more in control, just how he liked it. "So, where shall we have this little competition of ours?" Firefang meowed in a mock official tone.

Oakwhisker smirked at Firefang, not pushing the subject any further. He sensed a bit of confusion when the tom was digesting his joke, Oakwhisker thought that Firefang would have known he was only joking by now. He was thankful when Firefang changed the subject. "So, where shall we have this little competition of ours?" Oakwhisker knew that the question was not meant literally. Firefang always chose the place of their games and competitions.
"You can choose." He said this, even thought Firefang knew he was going to be able to choose. It was customary, it was the way he and Firefang worked. Oakwhisker waited for his friend to make a decision while he readied himself to loose the challange. He remembered the first time they had a compition as such. Oakwhisker had wone, beingthe better tracker, and Firefang had made it know that it was not alright. Oakwhisker had saved the friendship by pleading that he was just lucky. Firefang never lost. Firefang's brows knit together with the effort of thinking. Where could they go? Most of the prey was bound to be hiding where they usually hunted, near the Training Hollow, seeing as how there were probably some cats training there already. They both knew the area around the hollow as well as they knew camp by now. It was time for a challenge. Perhaps they could go to some secluded clearing and go for a few rabbits? It had been a while since there had been any rabbits on the fresh-kill pile.
"Wanna go to a clearing, far away from camp, where we can go for some rabbits?" Firefang suggested with a smile. He was quite proud of how he had thought that one up. He'd secretly been wanting to try his skills on a rabbit for a long time. This way he got exactly what he wanted, and it was even completely justified! His whiskers spread as a prideful smile came across his face. His genuis was so obviously unparalleled by any other cat's when it came to these things! "We can hunt for other stuff on the way, of course," he added as an afterthought.

"Wanna go to a clearing, far away from camp, where we can go for some rabbits?" Oakwhisker watched the obvious pride spread through Firefang at his wonderful idea. "We can hunt for other stuff on the way, of course." Oakwhisker purred then meowed, "That's a great idea, Firefang! I would have never been able to think of such an idea!"
Always make Firefang feel superior to yourself. He smiled at his friend while he waited for him to lead the way. Always let Firefang lead the way.Oakwhisker knew that other people would find no friendship at all in all of the things that you had to do just to keep Firefang happy, but Oakwhisker was alright with the way things worked. He had never wanted to be a leader and he liked pleasing others. He knew some cats would tell Firefang to shove it where the sun don't shine, but Oakwhisker was actually happy with their friendship. Oddly enough. [/blockquote]

Firefang smiled freely at his friend, something that he only did around Oakwhisker, for smiling would make him seem soft to the rest of the clan. The other tom knew as much as Firefang did that if any cat in the clan ever had an inkling of a thought that the ginger tom was weak in any way, that cat would end up missing an ear, possibly two. Perhaps they would even wind up missing part of their tail if Firefang was irritated enough and his lackey had the proper motivation. That was just the way that Firefang worked. He wasn't good about showing his happiness publically.
"Why don't you lead the way this time? You're better at finding trails than I am, and we should find someplace that isn't hunted frequently." Firefang stepped aside for his friend to take the lead. His paws itched with the strangest urge to take off running in some random direction, to go crashing through the forest with no heed for stealth or purpose. He just wanted to run. Of course, he realized that that would be impossible given the objective that he and his friend had. A quiet snarl erupted from his chest and his ears pinned back against his skull. Firefang glanced toward Oakwhisker. The tom was probably pretty confused at the moment. "Oh, it's not you. Go ahead," he meowed with a pathetic attempt at a reassuring grin. His tail waved in a motion that was supposed to spur Oakwhisker forward.

Oakwhisker was quite torn by Firefang's words: "Why don't you lead the way this time? You're better at finding trails than I am, and we should find someplace that isn't hunted frequently." He was torn by the fact that there were two rules to choose from: Always listen to Firefang and Firefang often tests your loyalty to the rules; never give him reason to think you do not follow them. Oakwhisker gave an uncertain glance at Firefang as he let out a snarl. Was he taking too long, choosing between the two rules? "Oh, it's not you. Go ahead." Oakwhisker smiled back at his friend then lead the way through the forest, mouth open as to better catch the scents.
He knew that he needed to impress Firefang or the whole "let Oakwhisker lead" idea would never happen again. Oakwhisker needed a place with very little cat scent... Oakwhisker moved quickly in zig-zag motions. Cat. Feint mouse. Stale squirrel. Cat. Oakwhisker was quite irked by the fact that he couldn't find any place, they were already deep in the forest. But wait... Oakwhisker veered sharply to the left. The cat scent was stale here, and the prey scent was strong. Oakwhisker looked over his shoulder and smiled at Firefang. They had found their place.
