It was almost dawn. Frostfang stepped stealthily out of her den, sure no other cats were awake. She quietly padded out of the camp to the river. Looking over her shoulder, she saw the sunrise. Wow, she thought, letting her mind fill with wonder. She shook her head. Useless thoughts when she had a chance like this. She could hunt all on her own without any annoying toms or anyone else chattering away like songbirds. Stifling a satisfied meow, she ran swiftly down to the river banks to look for prey.
When she got there, she saw a robin pecking for worms along the bank, oblivious. She began to creep stealthily towards it.

Heronstep was out early and the beautiful sunrise made her even more optimistic that usual. /I'll try some hunting in the trees for once. I'll be sure to catch \something!\/, she thought, noting the tumult of birdsong and letting it wash over her. With a shake of her gray-blue fur, she headed out towards a large spreading oak tree. The she-cat scrambled up over the first few branches and almost fell until she levered herself up onto a large limb where a gray-furred squirrel sat nibbling at some sort of nut. Heronstep gradually began slinking towards it until…
CRACK! The branch gave way under her feet, sending the squirrel launching itself into another tree and chattering angrily and tipping the StreamClan cat head over tail to form a sudden but intimate relationship with the ground below. That particular patch of ground that Heronstep was meeting turned out to be just inches away from a certain robin, digging for worms.
"That was fun!", giggled the mud covered Heronstep as the robin fluttered away up into the tree. Then she gazed up at the not so happy face of Frostfang. "Oh,", she said, her bubbly voice just slightly less peppy. "Was that your robin?"

Frostfang rolled her eyes. Just her luck that that Twinklestep, as she secretly nicknamed Heronstep, had interrupted her. "Yes" She growled, her frost-white tail twitching irritably, "It was. Now clear off so I can actually catch something. The way you bounce around, you'll scare everything from here to the PineClan border." She turned and stalked off towards the reed beds. Young warriors, they thought they everything was a joke. And yet, in retrospect Heronstep wasn't so bad. Too happy maybe, but at least she had some sense. Oh stop it, Frostfang told herself irritably , that's the second time today. She riushed onward to prevent herself from thinking more about such things.

Reaching the reed beds, she sniffed around and listened for water voles or other small prey. Her careful searching was soon rewarded by the scent of a nearby shrew and a rustling in a small clump of reeds only two foxlengths away. No cat's going to take THIS catch away from me, she thought. Licking her lips in anticipation, she crept closer until she was practically on top of the clump of reeds. She couldn't see the shrew, but could tell by the still-steady rustling it was there. She quickly pinpointed the noise and swiped quickly downward towards where she guessed the rodent to be. The small squeal of pain that was quickly cut off told her that her guess was correct. You're the best hunter in StreamClan, she told herself, You don't need anyone else. Even so a small voice in her mind quietly said that Heronstep was good too. Shut up, she told the voice, you saw how she lost the squirrel AND my robin. She stood idly burying the shrew and haing an arguement wit herself.

Heronstep looked up at the older warrior, genuine concern in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so sorry!", she trilled, bounding over to Frostfang's side. "Do you want some help hunting? Here," she said without waiting for an answer from the white she-cat. "I'll get some fish." The young warrior went closer to the river's edge and crouched there, tail swishing back and forth as she scanned the water. Then she shot out her paw, almost faster than the eye could follow. In a flash, there was a limber silver fish writhing on the riverbank. Heronstep pinned it with one paw and quickly snapped its neck.
She smiled sweetly at Frostfang as she pushed the fish over to her. "Here. This one's yours."

Frostfang was jolted out of her reverie. She narrowed her eyes at the bluish gray she-cat. Why was Heronstep even bothering to be nice? Ususally Frostfang's moody mask sent a clear message of "Go away". But this silly young cat was trying to help her. A mass of feelings surged inside Frostfang. Contempt, suspicion, hope, and even longing were rolled together in one huge mass. For now, Frostfang decided to put up with Heronstep. She certainly wasn't leaving the riverbank just beacuse of some peppy upstart. She took the fish tentatively. Gruffly she replied, "Thank you. But I can hunt perfectly well by myself." Frostfang padded off to try and catch more prey, but her mind was on the young warrior who showed kindness towards her, when she'd thought there was none left for her in this life. "Thank you, StarClan" She whispered, though with little idea of the starry cats' response.

Heronstep twitched her tail at the fish with a slight smile on her face. "Go on. Eat it. I doubt you can hunt while toting it around in your mouth." The she-cat giggled at the thought. "Now," she said while swinging her head around eagerly. "Where do you want to hunt? I've probably scared everything away from here to the PineClan (?) border." She snorted and looked over to her companion with light in her eyes.
OoC// Sorry if that last bit seemed too slashy. xD

After she ate the fish, Frostfang snarled softly, clawing the ground. Kindness had turned to annoyance. "If you want to hunt with me, you had better be bale to keep up, that's all I say." She growled, hoping it would deter the gray she-cat. She bounded off north towards MeadowClan, when she smelled an odd scent in the air. "Badger!" She said in alarm, then noticed two MeadowClan warriors on the border, seemingly waiting. She rushed over.

Tigertail nodded, seeing the two StreamClan cats coming from their side of the border. Thankfully they came fast, Tigertail didn't feel like waiting too long for them to bump into a patrol. It would have been a pain in the tail, that it would. Plus he wanted to get back to camp and warn his own camp, as well as pay a trip to Icetail.
"Heyo," he said to the approaching gray and white cat, sniffing the air to confirm it was a StreamClan cat. It was also a she-cat, he noted. Now he just hoped the she-cat would be willing to hear them out. After all, a badger was no laughing matter.

Frostfang growled softly, though not rudely. "Does Cedarstar have a message for StreamClan?" She asked. She sniffed the air once more, the reek of badger fading but still able to be smelled. She added drily,"Or did a badger come into our territory from yours?" She appraised the two toms with cool green eyes. She recognized them, Stormclaw and Tigertail. Now she hoped they would get on and give her the message. After all, she still had Twinklestep to deal with.
