Dappledflower felt the pain just as she had taken a few bites of a scrawny rabbit one of the apprentices had brought for her. It was such a nice day, too, she thought with a groan. Why did such a beautiful day have to be broken by something as painful and as messy as this? Even if the end result was even more beautiful (she already could imagine the feeling of her kits suckling), the trouble it took just seemed like such a waste. She mewed softly, calling out for Rabbitstep or Icetail, whichever could get there faster. After all, with kits on the way, there was no time to lose.
It was brighter than usual, she noted. The sun must really be shining out there. Idly she wondered if it would be so bright that looking around would be hard to do. Then she mentally smacked herself. The sun would never turn on the cats like that. It may get bright at times, but it never would blind them to such an extent. “Icetail!” She cried.

OOC: I am temporarily standing in for Icetail. Hopefully Kiddo will come back.
She was in her den cleaning out her herb stores when she heard Dappledflower's anguished meow. Instantly she dropped the pawful of dusty thyme she'd been holding and began to rummage for borage and a few poppy seeds. Her first litter of kits, imagine! What would it be like? She wondered. Icetail didn't know, but felt sure it would be exciting. She quickly finished gathering the seeds, putting the ones she needed in the borage before wadding it up, taking it in her mouth and swiftly padding out of her den. The medicine cat's thin body was moving fast, her long legs eating up the distance between her den and the nursery. Soon the mostly white medicine cat was going into the nursery, green eyes showing her excitement. She knew exactly what to do. Spreading out the herbs in front of the pained calico queen, she calmly asked, "How is the pain, Dappledflower? Can you feel any pushes in your body yet?" Secretly, Icetail was a little nervous, but also proud of her abilities and confident that she could do this. She had to. The MeadowClan she-cat sat down, tail twitching slightly. Perhaps Rabbitstep would come soon. StarClan grant the mottled queen have an easy birth, she prayed.

Dappledflower could smell the medicine cat before she could see her. Which was useful, as Icetail's bright pelt blended in smoothly with the strong light filtering in the nursery. That couldn't be normal, Dappledflower decided with a flick of her ear, waiting for the medicine cat to speak to her. “How do you think the pain is, Icetail?” The queen said, a little roughly, not meaning to snap at the medicine cat. Of course Icetail wouldn't be able to answer that-- as a medicine cat she had sworn never to have kits! “I don't mean to snap,” Dappledflower apologized, closing her eye at another constriction.
“There are pushes, yes, dear.” Though, it was obvious enough. It wasn't the pushes the mottled queen was worried about, however. It was the fact that Rabbitstep was not here. And if he was, he hadn't the decency to announce his arrival. Even if he wasn't allowed in the nursery at the time, it would be nice to know he was nearby. The queen let out another groan, wondering just how long this would last. StarClan help her now! [/blockquote]

ooc; Sorry. D| Been busy.
Tan tabby head stuck itself into the nursery, yellow-green eyes blinded for a moment at the lack of light in the cozy den. Rabbitstep blinked for a few more times, eyes slowly adjusting to the dim light. "Dappledflower?" he called softly, taking in her scent and...Icetail's? "And Icetail?" The Warrior slide into the den, pausing for a moment to debate whether to go forward or stop here. He could get into the way if he went too far, so instead of moving he meowed a 'Is she okay?' after Dappledflower groaned.
Surely she was, after all, Icetail was a medicine cat. And this had happen many times before, correct? But what if something went wrong? What if one got stuck? Great StarClan! What would you do if a kit got stuck? His mouth dropped at bit at all of these thoughts, and he flicked his eyes back at Dappledflower, kneading tearing the poor ground in slight hidden panic.
ooc; Rabbitstep Rabbitstep Rabbitstep.
...omaigawd what if one did get stuck. D:

Icetail bit her tongue to stop from winging a sharp retort right back at Dappledflower. But that was not how a professional behaved, trading insults like a kit. Yes, she was in pain, but she could at least bother to be polite. But an apology was forthcoming. Good. "I know it's hard, Dappledflower. You seem to be doing fine so far, if the pain gets too bad let me know and I'll give you a poppy seed or two." Pushes...so the kits were already coming and the pre-delivery pains had passed, she guessed. Another scent came to her notice..the queen's mate now had arrived, before Icetail even got her last word out. The brown tabby tom seemed rather anxious. "Yes, Rabbitstep." The white MeadowClanner said simply, not wanting to be distracted much from watching her patient. "She's doing fairly well." In all honesty, Icetail wasn't exactly sure whether this was regular or not, but Dappledflower didn't seem to be dying. Not dying was good. And besides, StarClan would guide her paws were there to be an emergency. She watched the gasping tricolored cat closely, watching for signs of a kit and the scent of milk. It was sure to come soon.

“I-Is that Rabbitstep?” Dappledflower murmured, opening her eyes slightly only to close them again. It was much too bright to have her eyes open. Sniffing the air, the queen decided that yes, indeed, the cat outside the nursery was Rabbitstep, and relaxed immediately. At least she knew that her mate was nearby and waiting for her, not outside on some patrol with no idea of what was happening. “Thank you, Icetail,” she said softly. “I think you're doing a wonderful job.”
Time passed rather quickly from there. Dappledflower wasn't sure just how many kits there were, as she had slipped into a blank state about half way through it. But slowly she felt her self waking up, a few kits pressed against her stomach to feed. Who knew kitbirth would be such a tiring event? The queen wondered, watching the small kits through partially lidded eyes. She felt like she had just made the entire journey in one night. Even attempting to shift slightly proved impossible, as her muscles screamed in protest.
But it didn't matter to her. After all, she had just given birth to MeadowClan's first kits. And how perfect they were! All three of them were the cutest things she had ever seen. “Come in here, Rabbitstep,” she called out. It was time to name the little kittens, after all. Dappledflower didn't want the dears to go too long without proper names. [/blockquote]

"She's going fairly well."
Fairly well? Rabbitstep's paws kneeded the poor moss-covered ground even more now. Fairly meant that she wasn't doing bad, but it also meant she wasn't going good, either. Maybe something was going wrong and Icetail didn't want to tell him about it? The tom's yellow-green eyes looked over Dappledflower, but everything looked normal ( as normal as kitting could get ). His mother looked the same way when she had her kits...or did she? It had been quite awhile ago...
"Come in here, Rabbitstep."
Dappledflower's lovely mew brought him out of his worries instantly. Rabbitstep padded forward, meowing a soft sorry to Icetail as he was forced to bump into her due to the small space. A purr began to rumble in his throat as he saw the kits -- his three kits, MeadowClan's first-- suckling. "They're perfect." He meowed. He sniffed a gray kit that was slightly large than the others. "What shall we name them? If you asked me, I'd name the gray one Sootkit..." The looked back over to Dappledflower and smiled. "Only if you like it, of course."

“Sootkit is a lovely name,” the queen agreed with a tired smile. Indeed, the little gray one did seem to have a pelt made of soot. And it was odd too, considering how neither she nor Rabbitstep had a gray coat. Someone in their history must've, for this perfect kitten to receive such a gorgeous pelt. The other two, though, looked much more like their parents, making the queen smile again and again. “It fits him so well.” As the gray kitten was indeed male. One of the other two was male as well, the brown one. And their sister was a swirl of colors, much like herself.
“And for the other two... well, I like Shrewkit for the brown one,” she said softly, obviously weary from the earlier events. Not that she wanted to rush something like this. But sleep was beckoning to her, and it would be nice to close her eyes for a bit, get some rest, then wake up as a ready mother. “He is very squirmy, like a shrew, besides his coloring.” Dappledflower laughed softly, nudging the two toms in turn with her tail.
“And their sister?” She asked Rabbitstep, looking at the warrior with loving eyes. “Any ideas of what her darling name would be?” [/blockquote]
