It was suppose to be "bigger # + smaller # = second bigger #. second bigger # - smaller # = first bigger #. second bigger # - first bigger # = smaller #.". x-x

It's Not "If a bigger # plus a # = a bigger #, then that second bigger # minus the # will equal the first bigger #, but the second bigger # minus the regular # = the first bigger #.".

OKAY. So, a bigger number plus a smaller number = a bigger number.

Example: 2 (bigger number) + 1 (smaller number) = 3 (second bigger number).

The second bigger number minus the smaller number = the first bigger number.

Example: 3 (second bigger number) - 1 (smaller number) = 2 (first bigger number).

It goes the same way with 3 (second bigger number) - 2 (first bigger number) = 1 (smaller number).

2 (bigger number) is a, 1 (smaller number) is b, and 3 (second bigger number) is c.

a + b = c is 2 + 1 = 3.

c - a = b is 3 - 2 = 1.

c - b = a is 3 - 1 = 2.

It doesn't have to just be a, b, and c, with 1, 2, and 3, though. Y'see, the letters substitute the number. Any letter can mean any number. Sometimes your teacher will give you a problem that says what numbers the letters stand for. Sometimes you have to figure it out.

43 - 20 = x. This is a very simple problem. You don't know what x is, so you have to figure it out by subtracting 20 from 43.

43 - 20 = 23. This means that 23 = x. You can know that this is right by adding 23 + 20, which equals 43.

Another problem could beee....

364 + n = 450. You don't know what n is. Yet. But you can figure it out by subtracting 364 from 450.

450 - 364 = 94.

94 = n.

How do I make sure this is correct?

364 + 94 = 450. .w.

So, you're pretty much just finding the missing number to the equation. xD The letters are sorta just there to confuse you, but they also stand for a number-- or numbers. By using the given numbers to your advantage, you can get the number(s) that the letter(s) stand for. .3.
