beliefs; ;
Doppelganger was constantly given the short end of the stick by StarClan throughout his time growing up (and also through most of his adult life). By all means, he should be carrying a grudge and despise StarClan for not listening to him or helping him when he most desperately needed them. However, he still holds almost the same amount of faith that he carried when he was in ForestClan. However, he is a bit more skeptical now as to how much StarClan really involves themselves in the lives of regular Clan cats outside of leaders and medicine cats. He still prays to them when he feels like he needs guidance though he doubts they would do anything, now more than ever, since he isn't even a Clan cat anymore. Doppelganger still holds the belief that StarClan are still up in the sky and watching him, but aren't really going to do anything if he gets into some sort of trouble, just like they never did before.
appearance; ;
Doppelganger is a large cat. He is sleek, though not extremely skinny, but not overly broad either. Just an equal balance of strength and speed that a normal cat would have, just a larger size. However, despite him looking like an average weight compared to other cats his size, he is actually extremely dense. The muscles that he has are extremely hard-packed together, making him much heavier than he looks. Everything is proportional with him, nothing is overly large, except his overall body size. His general body has no specific connotations to being of any specific breed. Overall, he just looks like a general alley cat, what first comes to mind when you envision a cat. His ears are perked, somewhat thin and a bit rounded at the tips, his face is round and rather handsome with an average muzzle; not too long, not too short, not too sharp and not too blunt. His eyes are evenly spread apart, an almond shape and somewhat slanted and framed by black skin from his coat pattern. They are bright and alert and show his intelligence, but also the hardships he's faced in the past.
His coat is short, but thick and dense. It is dusty and somewhat coarse due to his life as a loner. Since he has to always worry about keeping himself alive with no support from anyone else, he doesn't always take time out to groom it. Just like his sister, he is black and white, but with a slightly different pattern. The most obvious is on his face. His ears are black, but the color doesn't extend much further except to barely brush the corners of his eyes. He has a large, diamond-shaped smudge that extends from the middle of his forehead to the tip of his nose, and then another spot on his chin, and one more on the right side of his jaw, right on the edge of his neck. The black cap on his ears goes down his back, but stays isolated along his spine, hardly reaching onto his sides, and covers his tail, which ends in a white tip. The rest of his body is white, with only black cuffs and shields on his legs.
personality; ;
At one point, Doppelganger was a sweet, friendly, and extremely compassionate cat, but his previous life in ForestClan has changed this. He still cares for other cats, but will not go out of his way to help them if he feels that there is nothing he can do for them. He is not a healer and does not claim to be, so if injured cats come to him for help, he sends them away to find someone else that might have more skills in that area. Doppelganger prefers to keep to himself more than joining into large social situations. He prefers more one-on-one situations. He doesn't like cats intruding upon his business and will not intrude upon another cat's, unless he feels that it is needed. Though he can seem dispondent and cold-hearted to general strangers, he still has compassion and empathy for them. He is still inwardly wounded by his past life among other cats, his mate and kits not supporting him when he decided to follow his sister away from their home, but also his entire family turning him into an outcast because he wasn't as talented as his siblings in their training. Doppelganger is no hero, by any means, but will do what he thinks is right when the time calls for it. Except when it comes to clan cats, especially warriors.
He has no outright aggression towards clan cats and will not attack them when he realizes who they are, but he will turn them away when they're in trouble, where he would help a loner or rogue in the same situation. He believes that if they really were in trouble, then their clanmates should be there to help, right? Otherwise, they will either learn from their mistake and not go off on their own again, or die. It is of no concern to him. The only clan cats that he will help are apprentices and kits. He feels they are too young to not help, but he will do as little as possible to get them out of danger and send them on their way. After being spurned by his entire family and having no one else try to stop him when he left ForestClan, he does not think highly of cats and their Clans, as he's come to realize that they don't care about anyone but themselves. Doppelganger no longer believes the positive aspects that might come from being in a Clan. He doesn't believe that Clan cats believe that you are dispensable if you are not a warrior or a strong fighter in the Clan, just as he was treated by his father and siblings when he was a kit and apprentice.
skills; ;
Because of his large size, Doppelganger has obvious advantages. He is extremely strong, due to plenty of muscle. However, because of his heavy, dense frame, he is pretty much a powerhouse. He can bowl over another, lighter-framed cat quite easily if he has enough momentum behind him. However, the amount of muscle and his generally heavy frame also is detrimental to his speed and agility. Doppelganger is anything but light on his paws or graceful. He can be cumbersome and pretty slow. This affects his ability to catch certain prey, such as birds or squirrels, and even mice, since he can't really give chase, so he relies heavily upon the element of surprise to catch prey. His claws and teeth are sharp and strong, it being necessary to have them like this when he's his only support for food and defense. He is also very intelligent, able to work out problems quite easily. His independence is helpful and hurtful to him. He is self-sufficient and self-reliant, not needing anyone else to help him provide for himself. However, he also has no one to help him if he gets an injury or becomes ill and cannot hunt.
history; ;
kithood
Doppelganger was originally born as Magpiekit, to Swiftfoot and Ternfur of ForestClan. He was the second youngest, but the biggest kit in the litter. Early-on it was apparent that he was the most shy and quiet of the four kits, which made him an easy target to his older, more confident siblings. Luckily he had his younger sister, Owlkit, to back him up and play with when Badgerkit and Snowkit picked on him. Growing up was hard for Magpiekit, since he had no interest in playfighting or pretend-hunting. All he wanted to do was watch his siblings do this or play with a moss ball.
His father, Swiftfoot, would always prompt him to join in, or even force him up against his much more skilled brother to maybe toughen him up or make him more confident, but the more he was paired with his brother, the more he lost, and the less confident he became. Also, the more Swiftfoot pushed Magpiekit to be like himself and his brother, the more his mother, Ternfur, comforted and coddled him, making him into quite the momma's boy.Apprenticeship
By the time Doppelganger was an apprentice, he was falling into a dark hole of depression. Pretty much the only pleasure he got out of life was going out with his mentor and being away from his siblings. Owlpaw was still extremely close to him and would always do chores around camp with him, but as she got to know her mentor, Brownfang, more and more, she wouldn't talk about much other than these new ideas that he had. Magpiepaw never agreed with these views, but he knew that his sister would get angry with him if he said anything against what Brownfang thought, so he just kept his thoughts to himself.
Eventually, all that Owlpaw would talk about was that Brownfang said she could be deputy just like him someday, or what Brownfang thought of medicine cats, or that Brownfang was proud of the squirrel she had caught the day before. At this point, Magpiepaw started avoiding his sister because he couldn't stand listening to the psychotic ideas that her mentor had poisoned her with and he became extremely detached from his Clan and family, falling even deeper into his depression. After avoiding his sister for a few days, though, he missed her quite a lot and approached her, asking if she wanted to help him with chores the next day, she agreed and Magpiepaw was happy to have his only friend back. The next day, Magpiepaw waited for his sister to join him so he could change the moss in the elder's den and check the elders for ticks, when Owlpaw ran up, saying that she was going out on a patrol with Brownfang, and that she could help him with the chores tomorrow. At this, Magpiepaw acted completely out of character and snapped at his sister, finally letting loose all of the feelings he had held in for so many weeks, telling her what exactly he thought about Brownfang and his ideas. Owlpaw fired back with that Magpiepaw was just jealous of her bond with her mentor. This barb shredded the last hope he had that he could, in fact, live out his life like a normal cat in the Clan and he decided instantly that he was going to leave. After night fell and everyone went to sleep, Magpiepaw left ForestClan, the only thing he had ever known, forever.Life as a Loner
When Magpiepaw first started out on his own, he struggled a lot, only being about halfway through his moons as an apprentice. For the first couple of moons, he was extremely thin, only eating every couple of days, but then he came across another loner named Simon, who took the young cat back to a small group of other strays where he lived with his family. The other cats felt that, for him to be a true part of their group, he would need to change his name. And settled on the name Doppelganger.
The group of cats lived nearby the ForestClan camp and could easily find out about the different dramas that were going on in the Clan. The Clan cats even would pin certain things on the small group when they got bored enough and felt that the loners were getting to comfortable. Everything usually was ironed out with a few minor scraps between the loners and the ForestClanners, so the loners stayed put. The longer he stayed there, the more at home and like a family he felt, much more than he'd felt with his biological family. He even had a mate named Lyla, who was one of Simon's daughters, and had two kits with her, Tansy and Marshall. After many moons with the loners, Doppelganger grew into a great cat, watching his kits grow up and spending time with Lyla and the other group members.
However, everything changed when word got back to them about the unrest in ForestClan and that some cats had seceded. Doppelganger instantly asked what happened to his family, the only family of entirely black and white cats. The cat that had heard the news and saw the cats travelling said that one black and white she-cat that looked similar to him was among them. Though he couldn't believe that his sister would leave her beloved Brownfang (who'd obviously become leader), he still decided that he wanted to follow them to keep an eye on his younger sister. Lyla and his children would not go with him, wanting to stay with the group, where it was "safe," so he went on his own and settled into life around other lone cats, nearby the Clans.
why don't you just let me be?
